If you've had your ear to the ground-- or maybe your eyes on FB and Instagram-- then you may have heard unconfirmed rumors that McFarlane Toys would be doing a line of 5" "Super Powers" figures.
All we had was the name, but since McFarlane does DC figures, it was a no-brainer that these new figures wold somehow be an homage to the original Kenner DC line from the 80's.
Now, thanks to jamesbuchananwinchester on Instagram, we're getting our first look at a packaged figure from the line.
Here is Darkseid. This is obviously a more modern take on the ruler of Apocalypse and not a re-do of the original figure. McFarlane has stated in the past that, when it comes to his take on DC figures, he has no interest in doing versions of characters that were already done prior to him taking on the license. With that in mind, on the back of the card, we can see that Superman and Batman will also be coming in wave 1. The image is a bit low-res, so it's hard to make out the exact designs of their costumes, but they are definitely not the classic, original Super Powers style costumes.
I'm all in this new line. In fact, I'll probably get two of each, one to open and one to keep on the card-- which is a rare thing for me to do. The only thing that looks a bit disappointing is that Darkseid seems to stand the same size at Superman and Batman. At least in the original line, Kenner made Darkseid larger and in true scale with the other figures. Here, it looks like Darkseid won't be the correct height or scale. Oh, well. Let's face it, it's a rare day when a toy company doesn't find something to screw up with their own toy license.
