Aside from his classic suit, this is probably the most widely accepted alternate suit that Spidey's had over the years.
First appearing in Amazing Spider-Man #252 (1984) with it's origins being detailed in Secret Wars #8. The suit itself was a living, alien life form and it began to influence Peter Parker's attitude, slowly turning him into a darker character. Peter eventually freed himself of the suit which then went on to attach itself to the Peter Parker hating character of Eddie Brock. Together, the two went on to be known as Venom.
With the popularity of the suit, and Mafex already having the mold from their previous Spider-Man figure, this one must have been a no-brainer for the company.
