I'm sure almost anyone who collects TMNT figures, especially the NECA stuff, collected the old Playmates figures from back in the day.
The original line ran for so long, that I think Playmates began to run out of ideas as to what other costumes to put the Turtles in to make new figures. They had been surfers and baseball players, but Playmates needed something different. Something fresh. So, they crossed the Turtles over with other recognizable brands. One of those brands was the classic Universal Monsters, which was very successful.
Now, with NECA now doing both Turtles and Universal Monsters, these new figures were just a no-brainer for the company.
We're now getting detailed photos of the first two figures in the line-- Raphael as Frankenstein's Monster and Leonardo as Ygor.
I can't say that these figures look like they fit in with any of NECA's previous TMNT figure lines. I see them existing more as their own thing, even though it's rumored that Judith Hoag, the actress who played April in the original films, will be returning to Turtles as the Bride of Frankenstein.
While they're not my cup of tea per se', they do look absolutely amazing. Everything about these figures encapsulate what NECA is best at.
Raph should be hitting stores in Feb with Leo following in May. Both should retail for around $40.
