PLAYMATES TOYS RETURNS TO THE STAR TREK BRAND

Star Trek has had a rocky road in the action figure market. The first Trek figures were the MEGO figures from the 70's. At the time, Trek was in reruns and doing really well. With this resurgence, MEGO got the Trek license for almost nothing and their figure line went on to great success for years and years.

Trek didn't return to toy isles again until the early 90's with the success of The Next Generation. This time, the license was with Playmates Toys, who was having amazing success with their Ninja Turtles line.

The line took off and lasted for years at retail, becoming an extensive line that covered more characters than anyone had before or since.

Trek has tried to make a few returns, but nothing has stuck since MEGO and Playmates. (I really liked the McFarlane line and wish that it had lasted.)

Trek fans must be very fickle about what they buy. Sometimes they support a toy line, sometimes they just show it no love at all.

With this new announcement, it looks like Playmates is hoping to return Trek to the long-lived line it once was. The last time Playmates did Star Trek though, it was for the first JJ Abrams film, and those figures we an absolute horror. Terrible. I have no idea what anyone there was thinking putting out such sub-par crap. You can't go backwards as a toy company. Once you set the bar yourself, you can't go below it.

While I don't have high hopes for this new line from Playmates, I also hope that I'm wrong. I want an awesome Trek line of figures again. I had both the MEGO line and I collected almost all of the original Playmates figures. Both times are full of fond memories. It would be great to get some new memories with Trek collecting again.

Come on, Playmates. Knock it out of the park.
